Microscope slides, 68, glass, contained within a pine (wooden) slide box, & made in the United Kingdom in about 1910 (photograph 1). The glass microscope slides are rectangular, with a circular observation compartment for the sample in the centre (photographs 2 to 7). Some of the slides have a decorative green or red rectangular sticker covering their top surface, except for the transparent observation circle (photographs 2 to 5). The top surfaces of other slides are clear with no decorative rectangular sticker (photographs 6 & 7). Most of the slides are labeled on the top surface, with the name of their sample, & occasionally their location (photograph 8). This label is predominantly a small sticker positioned at top or bottom of the slide, or two small stickers at both ends (photographs 2, 4, & 6). Sometimes the sample label has been written directly onto the slide's decorative green or red rectangular sticker (photographs 2 & 4).  The pine slide box is rectangular, & has a thin layer of dark green material attached to it's top surface, & three of it's four side surfaces (photographs 9, 10, & 12). The rectangular piece of pine at one end of the box, is missing (photograph 11). The bottom surface is covered with a thin layer of material, decorated in blue & white tartan (photograph 12). The box is split into a lid & a container, with their approximate depths in regard to the box's depth, being 1/4 & 3/4 respectively (photograph 1). The inside of the lid is lined with a thin rectangular piece of maroon coloured velvet. The inside of the container is divided into numerous slots, made from pine, which together form a slide rack. The microscope slides fit horizontally into the slots, with most slots being able to accommodate two slides (photograph 1). The front side of the lid has a rotating metal hook near both ends, & the front surface of the container similarly has two small metal loops, which form a latch with the hooks, to close the lid (photograph 9). The lid can only partially close, as the hinges that originally attached the back of the lid to the back of the container, are missing (photograph 12). The microscope slides are in reasonable condition for their age (photographs 2 to 8). The box's lid & container are missing the pieces of pine, which makeup one end of the box (photograph 11). The lid of the box is semi detached from it's container, as the lid's original hinges are missing (photograph 12). The material attached to the outside surfaces of the box has worn away in some areas, & the colours have faded with age (photographs 9, 10, & 12). However the box could be repaired, & stays together well with the use of rubber bands. The approximate length of the individual glass microscope slides is 7.6 cm, the width 2.5 cm, & the depth 0.2 cm (photographs 2 to 7). The length of the pine slide box is 29 cm, the width 9.4 cm, the depth 4 cm, & the weight 655 g (photographs 9 to 12).
