THIS IS OAKLEY

Oakley was found in the street by a member of the public in January, he was dragging his back legs along and howling in pain.. She immediately called North Devon Animal Ambulance, within 30 minutes this lovely cat was picked up and taken straight to the nearest vets..The member of the public thought Oakley had been hit by a passing car, but the vet confirmed our suspicions, there were no signs of skin grazes or cuts, just a very badly broken leg and hip, a very clear inward impact, from a boot !! Poor Oakley had been kicked with such force, his ball and socket had shattered, and his femur was also broken.. The vet advised that Oakley, who was believed to be only a few months old,  would require extensive & expensive surgery to repair the damage, and there was no chip, so no trace of an owner..

This is where his luck changed..... At North Devon Animal Ambulance we NEVER put an animal that can be saved to sleep, so we agreed to cover the expense of the treatment, and Oakley's long road to recovery began..

After a week resting in the vets following surgery to insert metal pins to repair the leg and hip, Oakley was collected by the Charity and taken into our own Special Care Unit to rest and recuperate. He was to stay there on cage rest for 6 weeks to allow his bones to mend.. The dedicated volunteers at the unit cared for Oakley night and day, along with all the animals in the unit, and the rehoming team set about finding a new home for him..we knew it would be a long road for Oakley, and he would need a quiet home, where he could have lots of rest, but lots of love as well.  4 weeks later the perfect home was found, and a lovely lady came into the unit to visit Oakley, and it was love at first sight, he purred happily in her arms for a while, and cried terribly when she had to put him back in his cage, but she made a promise to be back, and she was every few days until finally the vet said Oakley was well enough to go to his new home, he would still need cage rest, but with a lot of TLC, so off they went, a very happy Oakley & his new mom.

As the pictures show, Oakley settled in great in his new home, and his wounds healed very well, his fur grew back and his scars are now gone..Oakley can now walk well with only a slight limp, and now goes out to play in his secluded garden, and he also has lots of toys to play with at home.. he is a very pampered and much loved pet, who brings hours of joy to his devoted new owner..

This is a very happy ending..

We hope for many more happy endings this year, but we are a small charity and Oakleys treatment cost over £1100.

Who Are We......

We are North Devon Animal Ambulance, an animal charity supported entirely by donations. We rescue, care for, rehabilitate and rehome many domestic and wild animals and birds often under traumatic and heartbreaking circumstances.

We are more than just another animal charity

When we help animals we often help people too! For instance, in an emergency, if someone has to go into hospital or care, we will collect and care for their pet.  Generous donations have provided us with 2 animal ambulances, have enabled us to open our 'Misty Centre' animal shelter and set up a special care unit in Barnstaple. We now also run an animal care clinic supported by client donations for those who are struggling with veterinary costs.

We will help any animal..even wild ones !!

If you've ever seen the terror in the eyes of a traumatised animal you will understand how vital it is to rescue them, find them a new loving home or return them to the wild.
