DESCRIPTION
The first edition of this work.
With the scarce frontispiece of De Smet.
With publisher's adverts to the rear of the text.
Comprising of letters from Reverend P J De Smet back home and to others regarding the indigenous people of America and the culture.
Pierre-Jean de Smet was a Belgian Catholic priest and Jesuit. His extensive travels totalled 180,000 miles and was known as the 'Friend of the Sitting Bull' because he persuaded the Sioux war chief to participate in negotiations with the United States Government.
An interesting insight into the mid to late nineteenth century impression of the colonies and America.
