DESCRIPTION

A very scarce work.

'Our Cruise in the Claymore' is a fascinating travel account, documenting a woman's cruise journey with her husband through the Middle East in the mid nineteenth century.

Travelling to Beirut, Damascus, Baalbec, Lebanon, Jerusalem, Cyprus, Rhodes, Dalmatia, and more.

This works offers an important insight into an Englishwoman's view of the Middle East, the culture and the people, in the mid nineteenth century.

Illustrated with a frontispiece, and seven plates.

Written by Annie Jane Harvey, nee Tennant. She married John Harvey in 1851, and died in 1898. Harvey also wrote 'Vyvyans: or, The Murder in the Rue Bellechasse', 'The Secret of Wardale Court and Other Stories', and 'Ivan Alexandrovitch: A Siberian Romance'. She also wrote under the pseudonym Andree Hope. To protect her reputation as she wrote, Harvey made disclaimers in her work to assure the readers that the content of the work was non-academic and not serious.

With a bookplate to the front pastedown, 'Nathaniel Barton, Straffan'. The Barton family was an important family in Straffan, settling there in 1828 when Hugh Barton, of a wine firm, built the Straffan House. The house is now the Kildare Hotel and Golf Club, a golf and leisure complex in Ireland, County Kildare. Nathaniel succeeded his father upon his death in 1854 and inherited the house, and subsequently passed the house down to his son.

Nicely rebound in a half calf binding.

Library label to the front pastedown.

Lacks the half-title as usual with a leather binding.

Collated from Copac from a copy held at the Register of Preservation Surrogates, complete.

A nicely rebound copy of Annie Jane Harvey's documentation of her experiences travelling on a cruise in the Middle East.
