A vintage solid silver gilt Scottish luckenbooth brooch with an unusual shell cameo addition.
Hallmarked Birmingham 1990 with sponsors mark LJ.
The traditional crown headed frame is set with cubic zirconia or similar ; the centre features a beautiful shell cameo, in profile, of a lady.
Traditional Scottish love tokens, such pieces date back as early as the 17th century and were originally sold at 'luckenbooths' (locked booths) near St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh.
Legend associates the luckenbooth with Mary Queen of Scots, where it was reputedly given by her to Lord Darnley, as a symbol of her love and devotion.
Ball hinge, extended pin and catch fastener.
Measurements: 4cm by 3cm.
Features a 3" safety chain.
In good vintage/antique condition.
