Ein beeindruckendes Zeugnis des musikalischen Wandels des britischen Pop-Sounds im Jahre 1969, als ein turbulentes Jahrzehnt sich dem Ende neigt. Unbestritten war 1967 der absolute Höhepunkt der Psychedelic Ära, aber der Einfluss des Genres hielt noch für einige Zeit an. Dennoch gab es signifikante Veränderungen, und zum Ende des Jahrzehnts war Großbritannien in zwei Lager gespalten: die studentische Subkultur wuchs, ‚ernsthafter‘ Pop entwickelte sich zu Rock, während die kommerzielle Musikindustrie den Erfolg gecasteter Bands wie der Monkees zu wiederholen versuchte. Dieser Zwiespalt zeigt sich in einer Art musikalischer Schizophrenie der britischen Pop und Rock Szene, wie sie auf ‚Try A Little Sunshine: The British Psychedelic Sounds Of 1969‘ zu hören ist, dem letzten Teil von Grapefruits gelobter Serie über die Musik der späten 1960er. Es wurde noch immer eine beachtliche Menge drogenschwangerer Alben veröffentlicht (wenn Psychedelic wirklich tot war, hat sicherlich niemand Bands wie The Factory, Fleur de Lys oder Jason Crest Bescheid gegeben), aber der Stil änderte sich spürbar. Status Quo wurden weniger schrill, eher bluesig, die Pretty Things verabschiedeten sich – eher unwillig – von ihrem damals nicht eben sehr erfolgreichen Meisterwerk SF Sorrow, Grapefruit trennte sich von seinem hauchfeinen Harmony-Pop zu Gunsten eines deutlich schlichteren Sounds, und The End (UK) ließ seine psychedelischen Soundlandschaften hinter sich, um sich in post-‚Eleanore Rigby‘ Barock-Pop zu versuchen. Ebenfalls auf dieser 3CD Compilation enthalten sind Singer-Songwriter wie Ralph McTell mit ‚Summer Come Along‘ und das Sitar-lastige Kleinod ‚Flaxen Hair‘ von Marc Brierley, sowie Songs von Tapestry, The Spencer Davis Group, Procol Harum und vielen mehr.
