You can do this!
The instructions below are basic and the work can be done whilst  the mechanism is still on the car. The job can be made much easier (but takes a bit longer) if the whole mechanism is removed and a vice is available to you. The  instructions below refer to the newer (2004 onwards) range of vehicles.

OK, Here we go:

INSTRUCTIONS (it may be worth printing them off):

Looking at picture 12, remove the plastic caps (7 & 13) and using s 13mm spanner or socket, remove the  nuts underneath (8 & 14) and then the wiper arm to work on it. In most cases, the bearing has completely collapsed and only the races are left (the ball bearings are all long gone). The outer sleeve/race is quite easily removed with the help of a vice and a socket.

The old inner/internal sleeve/race can really be siezed on (and even appear to be part of the pivot, but don't be misled, the inner sleeve of the old bearing is still attached to the shaft and there is a lip holding it in place which  hides the seam. I n theory, the old bearings will pull off but as they have been in place for years and are are held on with a lip (which must be ground off). They can more easily be  ground off with a dremmel or angle grinder (and it's a lot quicker).

Even if one just grinds off the retaining lip/burr and a flat face on the inner race so that you can grab it with vice grips.

We must be careful to only remove the minimum amount of metal that is required and be careful to protect the pivot shaft from damage. Place a large cloth cover over your windscreen and paintwork to protect from sparks if you are working close to the car (as they can damage the finish on your vehicle).

Once removed, one simply replaces it / them. If it's a tight fit, it's pretty much job done as there is only lateral forces acting on the bearing (you can coat the shaft with a thread lock / nut lock adhesive (e.g. Loctite 243) to be sure (picture 9)).

Also, usually only one bearing is gone at a time, so you don't need to change them both as the other one will help you by acting as an anchor for the position of the one you have just replaced. The good one could stay good for years to come and you have a spare one for if it does go.

However, you may want to use a centre punch to re-create a holding lip or drill the pivot shaft (pictures 5-8). If you are going to drill a hole through the centre of the pivot shaft, a normal high speed (HS) drill bit will probably NOT do the job. You will need a cobalt HS drill bit.

One can either drill right through and put a washered nut and bolt in place  or a smaller hole for a self tapping screw. I find that if you  don't damaget the shaft on removal, they don't move at all and the new bearings are stuck for good, but it's up to you of course.

(These bearings will also fit the older (Pre 2004) vehicles too, but require a slightly different method (and a 20mm long (thread) M8 bolt).

OLDER VEHICLES PLEASE NOTE:

There are 2 slightly different linkage designs. The pictures are of the newer (2004 onwards) wiper wehich has a fixed post / pivot and the older (pre 2004) has a rivett. This bearing will fit the older design, but this  rivett needs to be discarded and replaced with a (preferrably stainless) 20mm M8 (flanged button head) bolt and (nyloc) locking nut.

I have found some decent videos on youtube which may help here, just search for "Youtube BMW 5 Wiper Bearings".

These bearings also fit many other wiper mechanisms (e.g. Renault Scenic range)which have the double arm on the drivers side as can be seen in the diagram in pictures 10 and 11. If the mechanism in the diagram looks similar (i.e the wiper arm is connected in 2 places with bearings and not directly to the drive (like the passenger side)) then these are probably the correct bearings. I have not yet come across a different bearing on non-commercial vehicles with this wiper design. If they are not the right ones, we will refund you in full and pay your return post.

Please check ALL the pictures and diagrams before you order.
