This is an Antique English 9 CT Gold Two Stud Boxed Set.

At the time of the original listing, we are in the process of listing a large number of antique and vintage items purchased in England.  These items are an eclectic mix including gold and sterling jewelry, and many unique, and in some cases, one of a kind items, in wood, brass, and iron, and other materials as well.

As part of the jewelry we purchased in England, this is one of five boxed stud sets, three in 9K gold, one in 15K gold with small diamonds, and one in sterling.  Other men's jewerly includes gold and rolled gold cufflinks, collar studs, and a few other items.  There is also quite a variety of ladies gold jewelry as well.

This is a beautiful set in a period box that may or may not be original to the set, but it seems likely that it is.  The faces of the shirt studs are 6 MM in diameter.  The set together weighs 1.06 grams as seen on our jewelry scale.  The photos are closeups; the size relative to a US dime is shown in one of the photos.

The studs are not hallmarked.  We have purchased a number of British Victorian and Edwardian gold pieces, particularly in 9 CT that were not hallmarked.  I am fairly sure this set is British, and the jeweler's information inside the lid is for a London jeweler, James Walker, Ltd.  Based on the appearance of the set and the box, I think the studs are likely Victorian or Edwardian, but we do not know the age for sure. The studs are marked "9 CT" near an edge, and the maker's mark, also near an edge, is "EAP" in an oval.

The date mark is in the same shape cartouche.  It looks to me like an ornate lower case j.  There definitely a slightly open loop at the top.  The shape of the cartouche, square with beveled corners, seems to match Cycle X, 1884-1900 but the lettering style in that cycle is upper case font with serif, clearly not a match.  For some assay marks, the gold marks differ from the silver marks, but the date letters are attributed as matching the silver letters.  In the case of Chester, there is no specific guidance either way in this regard.  There is a four digit phone number for the jeweler in the lid, so if the box is original, it seems that, along with the overall appearance, would suggest the set is late Victorian or perhaps Edwardian, but I do not know for sure.  The maker's mark is "O.D" in a diamond cartouche, and I was not able to find any attribution for that mak.

Condition:

Studs

The studs are in very good used condition, with some very fine microscratches consistent with normal handling and use.  The are noticeable only on very close inspection in the closeup photos, highlighted by the photo flash.  This is a great looking set and we will guarantee your satisfaction with the appearance of the set.

Box

The box has several condition issues to be noted:

  • The covering on the box appears to be paper with a marbleized brown and black pattern.  There are pervasive scuffs and chips in the surface of the paper with some spots of heavier wear on the edges and corners as seen.
  • on the inside there are a couple of brown stains across the jeweler's information in the lid
  • the buff colored material lining the box around the studs has some discoloration as seen
