very home alarm requires a rechargeable battery back up that should last for at least 8 hours of mains failure. There is 5 factors to consider when choosing a replacement battery

1 Voltage, that's the easy one, 99 percent of all alarms are based on 12 volts, as is the above item.

2 The A/H rating, A/H stands for amps per hour, in general any A/H will work however the more A/H the longer the battery will last on mains failure.

3 The Load, Basically the more powered sensors attached the higher the load and a larger A/H will be required to attain the 8 hour standby rule. A short rule of thumb systems with;

1 or 2 pirs can use a 1.3  A/H

2 to 4 pirs use a 2.2 A/H

4 to 6 pirs use a 3.0 A/H

8 to 12 pirs use a 7.0 A/H

above 12 pirs consult a specialist

4 Size, the ideal size is the largest A/H that will fit within the alarm panel, there are panels like the ADE Optima XM, XL will take up to a 7 A/H at a push but the new Honeywell Optima will only take a 2.2 A/H   CALL USWITH YOUR PANEL AND WE WILL ADVISE

5 Longevity, a typical alarm battery will last between 3 and 5 years, different factors include temperature and charge rate, high charge rates and high temperatures reduce the battery life.

Failure to replace the battery at regular periods usually results in one of 2 scenario's

1 One of the six 2 volt cells will go open circuit, if this happens and the mains is lost then the hold of power to the bellbox will cause the self activating bellbox will activate causing the outside siren to activate (usually at 4am) or if there is a mains dip or spike, the batter cannot support any mains dip or absorb any mains spikes, this will result in false alarms.

2 One of the six 2 volt cells will go short circuit, if this happens the battery will go from a 12 volt battery to a 10 volt battery, the battery charging circuit with the over charge the remaining 5 cells which overcharge the remaining cells, this can either make a second cell go open circuit (see above) or make an additional cell go short. this adds an additional load on the charging circuit. On certain panels like the ADE Optima range or the ADE Logic 4 (many others as well) it will burn out the charge resistor (48R)

IN SHORT YOUR BATTERY WILL REQUIRE REPLACING EVERY 4 YEARS, IF NOT REPLACED YOU WILL GET FALSE ALARMS OR PANEL FAILURE
